March Guest: Sian Fair

Our March Gallery was so inspiring with the addition of Sian Fair as our talented guest.  Sian has a lovely way with words and a light and delicate hand with her crafting that combine to create beautiful and meaningful pages.  Here is a little more about her . . .

I’m Sian Fair and I live in the UK with my husband and two teenagers. I’ve been making stuff since my Grandma taught me to knit at the age of five and I started to scrapbook as soon as I discovered how many of my favourite things it brought together in one wonderful hobby. I love to cut up paper and write and record and take photographs all at the same time! I contribute to Scrap365 magazine and to Jot and I am a member of the Creative Team at Get It Scrapped. When I’m not knitting, sewing, scrapbooking or reading you can find me blogging at From High In The Sky.”

It was hard to choose a layout from the March kits! I couldn’t resist a bit of a St Patrick’s Day theme, using that fresh green paper, with a page about my daughter playing “trad” or Irish traditional music, but I also very much enjoyed making “Big Fish” because I had the pleasure of using some photos of my hometown which my friend Ruth took when she was visiting. Thanks Ruth.

This is a photo of a March mood board I’ve been pulling together. I loved the chalkboard flair in the kit this month and meant to add one to my board – but then I used them all up instead.

This photo of me as a little girl becomes my favourite photo every time I rediscover it. I don’t know that there has been a photo of me before or since that I have liked any better. I love the colours, and the memory of that car. It’s like the one from the Harry Potter books!

Thanks for the inspiration Sian!  We have so enjoyed your work with us this month (and little you is too, too adorable!).  :)

Amanda's distressed rub-ons technique

Hi JBS fans! It's Amanda here and today I'm sharing my love of JBS rub-ons! I love Jenni's rub-ons not least because of the fantastic quality. No other rub-ons work for me with this technique...

I created this layout and wanted to add some of the days of the week rub-ons, but so that they worked better with the style of my page I wanted to distress them. You can see the final result here.

So, I don't know if you have noticed this, but JBS rub-ons are so thick and strong that you can actually peel them off of the backing sheet and apply them directly, like stickers. Awesome, right?! This is exactly what I did here, except before sticking them down I tore some pieces, folded and then crinkled them as I applied them.

Super simple but exactly what I needed for my layout!

Do you have any unusual ways of using your supplies? We'd love to hear about them. Thanks for stopping by today!

Sunny Skies

Are there sunny skies where you are this weekend?  Whatever the weather, you can have your own Sunny Skies with our new digital kit!

This kit is the first digital release of Lisa Dickinson's exclusive paper designs for our monthly JBS  Mercantile Kits.  Now you can have the gorgeous colors and patterns Lisa designs for our kit subscribers and customers in digital too!

Here's what our two of our creative team members have done with this kit.

This is from Nirupama, our hybrid scrapper.  Isn't just wonderful?  Such a beautiful airy piece of art.
From Nirupama:

"I loved Jenni's video showing her rub on techniques. Her trick for applying them to vellum is so good. I decided to print the blue floral patterned paper from Sunny Skies on vellum and fussy cut the flowers out. I also layered some rubs on the blue vellum paper I created with the awesome gold speech bubble runs ons. I treated the background with gesso and added some color with gelatos and water."

Niru used a lovely bunch of traditional scrapbooking product from the JBS Mercantile also:
Alterable Alphas - Microdot
Embellished Butterflies
Rub-Ons
Die-Cut & Perforated Paper - Bank Statement
Vintage Sew-On Buttons

This one is from Chrissy Guido who played and blended and layered all in digital!

Thank you ladies for your wonderful inspiration!

If you want Sunny Skies for yourself, then grab it this weekend when it's 25% off!

Holiday Mini-album by Doris Sander

Today's mini-album installment is brought to you by Doris Sander.  Be sure to check Write Click Scrapbook today for more mini-album inspiration!

For 2014, I chose "holiday" as a guiding word and decided that I wanted to make a mini-album to help keep me on track celebrating all year.  Each month I add the following pages to my mini-album:

  1. Intro page with transparency overlay
  2. Birthday Calendar
  3. Favorite Quotes Page
  4. Recipe Page
  5. Pages on holidays and events from the month
  6. A page document current favorites and happenings of my son and me

Behind the transparency of this month's intro page, I wrote a few notes on what I love about March.-

Here is the birthday calendar and quotes page.  Since March is my birthday month, I chose quotes that reflect my personality.

This spread has the recipe page and St. Patrick's Day collage.  This month I'm documenting some of my favorite recipes from mom mom's collection.  So far, I've only gotten one done.  The tabs can be pulled out to reveal the recipes.

Here are March birthdays and a haiku dedicated to the first day of spring.  March is a big birthday month in my family!  My two older sisters share the same birthday, I was born on my cousin's first birthday, and now two of my littlest nieces (sisters) have March birthdays.  Hooray for March birthdays!

And, finally, a page about my son and me.  The tags can be pulled out and have notes on things my son and i have been doing and enjoying this month.

This has been my favorite scrappy project ever!  I love it so much and would highly recommend it!  If you would like to see the rest of this mini-album, you can find it HERE.

Digital Inspiration Right Here!

We have two digital kits on sale at our Shoppe at JessicaSprague.com.

They are beautiful kits as are the layouts our creative team made for us using them:

What a wonderfully playful layout by Susie Moore!  I love the circle embellishment and her banners peaking from the bottom of it.  It's a wonderful way to show off the patterns from the Modern Mercantile Kit.

Audrey Tan used Modern Mercantile patterns in a large chevron pattern for her background and layered the General Store Postage Stamps down and behind her photo.  How beautiful!

Digital Supplies:

Cassie surrounded this wonderful family photo is with a lot of timeless elements from the digital shoppe. The background patterned paper from the Modern Mercantile is perfect for this theme!

Amanda's Studio Space

Hi everyone! Amanda here today to give you a little look at where I create. I don't have a craft space at home any more, my studio is actually a 20 minute drive away! I outgrew my house and needed a dedicated space as it is used for both work and play. Despite the fact that I can no longer craft into the wee hours, I love having a place away from all the other distractions that go hand in hand with working at home!

As part of a very old building that used to be a sawmill many years ago, my studio is rustic with old stone walls. I love the character they add! This corner houses a large portion of my scrapbooking supplies. The drawer units hold embellishments and other miscellaneous supplies. The ones on the left contain all my Jenni Bowlin goodies and small vintage items and ephemera. On top is a set of vintage filing trays which I use to keep photos I've printed ready to scrap with.

On top I have all my 12x12 paper and other bits in vertical storage files. The antique wooden drawers at the far end contain all my stickers and rub-ons, with 2 baskets on top holding more vintage goodies.

To the right of all my drawers I have this old furniture piece. On top I have all the large "tool" items which I use regularly: my Silhouette Cameo, vintage typewriter and sewing machine. There are also a few old frames and things I plan to make something with...one day. Inside this cabinet I keep  fabric and sewing items, consumables for my silhouette, stamps and a bazillion bins of vintage buttons ;-) Just peeking out behind you can see a shelf unit - that's where I keeps books and other random items.

On the other side of the room is my desk. It's a huge vintage desk which allows me to spread out when creating as well as keep a multitude of my most-used supplies out where I can reach them.

I use various trays and dishes to hold supplies as I create. The white tray you see here I use to hold stickers, paper scraps and packs of things that are too big to fit into my smaller glass or ceramic dishes. The tiered basket at the back takes care of my Washi tape addiction.

Along the back of my desk I have several divided containers which hold mostly die-cuts. I use them on almost every project so I have them in open bins and containers so I can dig through as I work. The piles on the left are my "incoming" items. Things I've recently bought that I don't want to file away into my stash to get forgotten until I've used them a little bit! Hanging behind them are a few "baggies" of vintage items I've put together for upcoming projects and paper scraps that are too cute to throw away.

Inside and on top of the drawers to the left of my desk are all my art supplies - paints, pens, brushes, etc. The basket you can just about see underneath my desk holds more painty things and mists.

Right in the middle of the room I have a huge workbench which serves as a second workspace. I use this for creating with my Mercantile kits or for any project that requires more spreading out. I love it as it's the right height for standing and I do like to scrapbook standing up. I wasn't going to show you this as it's currently in what I affectionately call "aftermath status", after a flurry of magazine deadlines, recording class videos and creating with the March Mercantile kits! But I can trust you not to judge me, right...?

Shh... don't tell!

My studio looks a little chaotic but, I promise, it's a very highy organised kind of chaos and incredibly functional! I hope you enjoyed taking a look around my creative home. Have a great day!
